- Francis was born in Bristol Valley, New York, which was known as Muttonville. On another page, Ref. (1) also says he was born in Cassville, Wisconsin. But it also says that his parents moved from New York to Cassville, Wisconsin, when he was one year old. He was educated and grew to manhood near Cassville.
In 1876, Francis and his wife moved from Grant County, Wisconsin to Buena Vista County, Iowa. They traveled by covered wagon along with Francis' brother, Jonathan, and his cousin, Chris Totman, son of DeLoss Totman.
He purchased land near Newell, Iowa but sold it on 27 Dec 1916 and moved to Storm Lake, Iowa where he lived until his death.
His first wife, Clara Belle Cottermole, and his third wife, Mary Gourney, were sisters.
