- James worked as superintendent of the Whipple File Works in Ballardville, Massachusetts. There he was in charge of one of the earliest machine cut file works. The company failed in about 1866/1867, so he and some of his friends bought the machinery, moved to Bever Falls, Pennsylvania and set up the Great Western File Works.
His wife was the daughter of James Tebbetts.
