  • Notes
    • Mary came with her father from Penfield, New York, to Pittsford, Michigan in 1836. In October of that year, she married James H. Thorn.

At the age of eighteen he decided to move from Dutchess County, New York to some western territory. He arrived in Michigan in 1834. He stopped for a while in Detroit. From there he went to Ypsilanti. Later he taught school in Farmington, and then moved west and explored Bean Creek Valley. He decided to settle in Jefferson Township, Hillsdale County. He walked some ninety miles to Monroe, Michigan to enter his location with the land office. After paying his registration fee, he had only ten cents left. undaunted by his lack of funds, his small coin was spent for cheese and crackers.

James was one of the early settlers of Hillsdale County and was very influential in shaping its affairs. His ripe judgement and keen intellectual powers made him a leader among men.
