«i»Clare Edwin Monroe, (bd. 04/02/1913 died on July 26, 2010 at his home in Pittsford, Michigan) surrounded by his family. Clare married Evelyn Wierda in 1937 and they were married for 69 years until Evelyn passed away in September 2006. Clare is survived by his five children: Barbara Page of Fairbanks, Alaska; Kathleen (Raymond) Hildebrand of Columbia, Missiouri; Thomas (Judith) Monroe of Evanston, Illinois; James (Cindy) Monroe of Traverse City, Michigan; and Joanne (Michael) Shaw of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; 11 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Clare began his education in a one room rural school house, graduated from Pittsford Rural Agricultural High School. He received his bachelors of Science in Education & Dairy Science from Michigan State University (formerly Michigan State College) in 1934. Education was a driving force in Clare's life. He taught vocational agriculture for 43 years. He was as well an advisor for the FFA, class advisor for the Junior Class and drama coach. Clare taught at Bellevue, Brooklyn, Addison, and Pittsford, Michigan. Throughout his adult life he was an active member of Michigan Education Association and National Education Association.
Service to community and church were values that motivated Clare throughout his life. He proudly represented the Republican Party at both the county and state level, was a member and/or officer of the Pittsford Lions Club, Sons of the American Revolution, Farm Bureau, local and state historical societies, First Congregational Church of Pittsford, and Clan Munro USA. He was an instructor at the American Youth Foundation's Camp Miniwanca.
Clare maintained his family's centennial farm that dates back to 1836. He joined his father, M. C. Monroe, in the family dairy farm and bee business operations in 1945. Upon his retirement from teaching, Clare started a 2nd career managing his own greenhouse business. He retired from the flower business when he turned 90.
Clare was honored with many awards over a life time of service to family, community and God. He lived a rich and fulfilling life. He will be remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.«/i»

Clare lived at 11131 Union Road, Pittsford, Michigan. He married the daughter of Anthony (or Antone) and Ethel May (Kardux) Wierda.
