Notes |
- James' family is found on the 1860 census for Mercer County, Ohio. His wife, Elizabeth, is listed as 23 which would put her birthdate as 1837 instead of 1828 as indicated by the information on her tombstone.
James' tombstone says "20 Dec 1892 68y 1m 3d" which suggests that his birthdate was 17 Oct 1824 instead of 17 Nov 1824.
James' parents were from Virginia and one reference suggests that James was born in Virginia, but he was probably born in Pennsylvania. He accompanied his parents to Shelby County, Ohio, where his father bought a farm along the Miami and Erie Canal.
James and Elizabeth settled on a farm in Shelby County and lived there until 1856, when they moved to Franklin Township in Mercer County. His farm included almost all of the present site of Montezuma, Ohio. James farmed all of his active life.
