| Notes |
- James was the fifth of thirteen children. He attended the public school at Unison, Virginia and lived with his parents farming until his parents died in 1913.
His father had been Superintendent of the Loudoun County Alms House and when he died in 1913, James took over as Superintendent and remaind until his death.
