  • Notes
    • James served as a Confederate private in 30 Regiment North Carolina Infantry in the Civil War.

A Confederate States pay receipt shows that as a Confederate private, James received $11 a month.

James attended and was graduated from Trinity College, a Methodist college in Randolph County, North Carolina, which in 1890 was moved to Durham and is now Duke University. He was awarded the B.A. degree in 1872 and the M.A. in 1874. He was a school teacher and principal in several North Carolina towns including Winston, and Monroe, North Carolina. He was known as "Professor Monroe."

James and his wife had seven sons and a daughter. James' wife died shortly after the birth of Eoline, their daughter. Faced with raising seven sons and an infant daughter, James reluctantly arranged with his best friend, Lachlin (Lauchlin?) Shaw, of St. Pauls, North Carolina, to adopt Eoline. She was raised as Eoline Peterson Shaw.
