- Hector is found on the 1871 census of Pictou county, Nova Scotia, Canada. He is listed as a 20 year old farmer of Scotch origin. He lived with his family in Merigomish. They all belonged to the Church of Scotland.
He is found on the 1900 census of Perth Amboy, New Jersey. It says he immigrated in 1880 and was working as a ship's carpenter. This census gives his birth date as Feb 1855 which is in conflict with the earlier census.
