  • Notes
    • Daniel's first business venture, of which there is an account, was the purchase of a fulling mill in Lebanon, Connecticut, which he operated until he sold it to his father in May 1798. He remained in Lebanon until near the close of 1800, when he moved to Berkshire County, Massachusetts. There he remained until 1816, residing first in Pittsfield, next in Sandisfield and lastly in Tyringham. In 1800 at Pittsfield, he bought an antiquated fulling mill from Valentine Rathburn, Sr., who had owned it since 1770. Smith's "History of Pittsfield" says "It was none of your newfangled German inventions, but an old fashioned, double-action crankmill, driven by a three-foot, open-bucket water wheel, only warranteed to run in a high freshet or a long spell of weather." Daniel equipped the mill with new and improved machinery and sold it to Daniel Stearns in 1801.

In 1816, he and his family moved to Plymouth, New York, where he built and resided in a log house, one of the first dwellings in the town. He built a carding mill there, which he and a partner operated, under the firm name of Monroe and Locke, until the year 1839. He also built another carding mill at the neighborhing village of Sherburne Four Corners.

Daniel served as a lieutenant in the War of 1812 in Captain John Wilson's company, Colonel Prentice William's Second regiment of Massachusetts Volunteers.

His first wife was the daughter of John Sexton.
