  The 1880 U.S. Census for Fairbury, Jefferson Co., Nebraska records James M. Monroe's parents as having been born in Virginia. This is probably incorrect information given by he maid, Maggie M. Hughs, age 20. The census taker put a mark by her name indicating her as the informant. James' occupation was listed as cashier.
