Notes |
- **********
«i»Christiana Munro was born in Novar House, Inverness, Scotland in May, 1826. She was the daughter of Major John Munro and his wife Isabella Gordon MacKay.
She was baptised "Christian" in Inverness Parish Church on May 16, 1826, child of John Monro and Isabella MacKay.
She came to Canada with her parents in 1832. They first settled in Penetanguishene, Ontario where her father worked on the building of the military barracks. He was a millwright and carpenter by trade. They then moved to Barrie where he took the contract of building Sanford's store. When finished, it was considered to be the best built building north of Toronto.
About 1835, the family moved to lot 14 on the 7th line of Vespra Township.
Christiana Munro married George Sneath in 1845. They first lived in Oro; in the next few years they moved to Nottawasaga, then to Sunnidale and hence to Midhurst. There they lived out their lives.
Christiana's chief concern was her home and family. Like other wives and mothers of her time, she spun the wool and wove the cloth, from which she made her husband's and children's clothing. Candle power was common lighting in those times, the candles were made in the home.
She often sewed or knitted by the light of the fireplace.
She was a good neighbor and kind friend, it has been said she would at any time of day or night, respond to a neighbor's call for assistance in time of trouble or sickness, whether or not the weather was fit for man or beast.
She was the Mother of eight boys and two girls, all of whom grew up to be useful citizens, and rendered distinguished service in the communities in which they lived.
Christiana Munro Sneath died in Midhurst, Ontario, on April 13th, 1894.
