- As a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy, he served with distinction in the Egyptian campaign of 1885. He was badly wounded at the battle of Gubat. He later served in the Khartoum Expedition in 1895. He was mentioned in despatches and won medals and a star. He also served in World War I in 1914 retiring as a Lieutenant Commander.
In 1887, he assumed by "Royal Licence" the additional name of Walker (Edward Lionel Walker-Munro)
His wife was the only child and heiress of Thomas Walker of Eastwood Hall, co. Nottingham.
