      [Alexander Monro] «i»Eldest son of Henry Monro; born 4 May 1847 (ied.1869) ; educated. Edinburgh Acadamy, Sherborne & Oriel College Oxford (M.A.); called to Bar 1872, went to India as Inspector of Schools 1879, Director of Public Instruction C.P. 1888-1904, acting D.P.I. Madras & M.L.C Madras 1893-4, C.I.E. 1904; retired 1904; Mayor of Godalming 1909-10 & 1910-11; died 20 September, 1916, having married 1879 Evelyn Agnes Dingwall, with issue 2 sons 2daughters- Alexander (1890-1953), Charles Carmichael Arthur (1894-1942), Katherine Evelyn (marrued 1913 Maor.General Sir John Taylor, born1884), & Violet Agnes.
