  When she was just a toddler (2 Mar 1871) Gertie got her hands on some concentrated lye which happened to be in the house and placing a portion of it in her mouth was severely burned by the rapid action of that chemical substance. Her injuries, though exceedingly painful, did not endanger her life. Gertrude and Claude were divorced about 1887-1890.
