Notes |
- William Harvey "Josh" Munro, Jr. lived all his life in Beaumont, Texas. In 1901-02, he attended Texas A&M College studying engineering. He worked his way through by returning to Beaumont to work in the Ineeda Laundry. In 1928, he founded the Munro Dry Cleaning Company at the corner of Broadway and Mariposa in Beaumont.
He served as president of the Downtown Kiwanis Club, board steward of the First Methodist Church, and director of the Texas Laundry Asociation.
He was an enthusiastic sportsman and shared his camp on Beech Creek with many a youngster and friend. One such youngster, John Jefferson, dedicated his book "Hunters Guide to Texas" to Josh Munro, a man who took time to take a little boy hunting.
William (Josh) built a home at 1208 Gilbert in Beaumont, Texas with the help of his grandfather, Stephen Randolph Pennington. Josh and Mary spent their lifetimes there where they reared their four sons. That building was given to the Beaumont Heritage Society in 1983.
He died at Schlesinger's Nursing Home of arteriosclerotic heart failure. He was 90 years old.
Josh's wife, Mary, was very active in Beaumont civic and cultural activities. She was one of the organizers and past President of the Woman's Club of Beaumont.
She was a long time member of the Parent Teachers Association and held office on both local and state levels.
She was a two term board member of the Beaumont Independent School District during which time she established physical exams for students by a registered nurse on a regular basis. She was an honorary member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an Honorary Teachers Fraternity.
