- John was the commander of "rebel troops". He later became president of the independent republic of Franklin. When Tennessee became a state, he was the first governor.
He was a rival of Andrew Jackson in selling Cherokee lands to their respective followers. They ultimately challenged each other to a duel on an island, but thought better of it and the old men had lunch together instead.
