- Clarence's wife, Gertrude, died in childbirth with their daughter, Gertrude. Clarence's step mother, Mary, weaned her own daughter, Merle, took baby Gertrude to breast and raised her for a time.
Later, after Clarence remarried, he came and took Gertrude back. Clarence and his second wife, Mary Lynn, had no children of their own.
