- James was never married. He lived in Southern California, Atlantic City, New Jersey and New York City, New York. At his death, when nearly 100 years old, he left a considerable sum of money to the Central Maine General Hospital, the Auburn Home for Aged Women, the First Congregational Society of Auburn, the Maine Missionary Society, the young Women's Home of Lewiston, the State Young Men's Christian Association of Maine, the Society of the Sisters of Charity, the Good Will Home Association, the Bible Society of Maine, St. Mary's Hospital, the Marcotte Home, the Lewiston-Auburn Children's Home, the Maine General Hospital of Portland, four other institutions, and several members of his family.
