- After his mother died, Walter went to live with his older half sister, Sarah. Walter is found in her household in the 1870 census of Newton County, Mississippi. Walter moved with Sarah's family in 1872 to Texas where they settled near Canton, Texas.
Walter is found on the 1900 census in Luling, Caldwell County, Texas with his wife and two children.
