  The following is an excerpt from al letter written on 4 May 1851 by Harriet to her uncle, William, who was in the California gold fields at the time with her father. Mr. Lewis took a notion to go to California and we had to come here [to the home of Mary Jane Beebe Monroe] and stay with Aunt perhaps stay here until you and Pa come back.
