The following is a copy of the letter asking for Elizabeth's hand in marriage, Harrison L. Monroe to John H. Broders:

      Unison, Virginia
      13 Dec

      Mr. John H. Broders
      Alex. D. C.

      Unison, Loudoun County
      14 Dec 1844

      Dear Sir

It is with some degree of embarrassment I attempt to address you these lines, preferring this method, to making a verbal declaration of my esteem for your daughter and in my humble opinion it is a duty enjoined upon me, and a duty I owe to you and Mrs. Broders as the parents of one who has pledged herself to forsake her parents and all that is near and dear and follow me to the altar and there acknowledge herself the bride of one who has equally pledged himself to love and protect through the various changes of this life and it is my earnest prayer that there may be no impediment to prevent our union.

Notwithstanding you manifested an unwillingness to our union when I conversed with you on the subject I now through the medium of this letter solicit your decided approbation hoping that you and Mrs. Broders have become more reconciled and I shall receive your consents which would be truly gratifying. I can assure you I know of no more satisfaction that I can render than I told you myself. I say to you my situation for my business is as good as any in acquaintance, any satisfaction that I can render you in reflection to my circumstances or character I shall be happy to render. I must now close by requesting you to answer this as soon as convenient.

      Yours respectfully,
      H. L. Monroe
