  • Notes
    • Excerpt from a letter received from N.G. (Nathaniel Gilbert) Munro dated 26 Dec 2000:

"My Mother told me that my Father suspected his Father ran away from home at about age 15. That my Grandfather's Father was a physician--who in 1840 or earlier, probably worked for Hudson's Bay Co. That my Grandfather refused to go back to Scotland, and study to be a doctor. That my Great grand father disowned my Grandfather for not doing his bidding, so my Grandfather went south to Colorado, went to work for the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad in 1860. My Grandfather worked 50 yrs. for the D&RG retiring in 1910, bought a farm in Ysleta, Texas. He died in 1936 at age 91 or 92."

«i»Hugh refused to talk about his family to any of his children, but bits and pieces of his background came to be known. We think that he had an older brother and sister, and it was Hugh James Munro who told the story about the first born son and daughter having the names George and Grace.

The story goes that Hugh and his father, George, had some sort of falling out when Hugh was a young man, and Hugh either ran away from home or just left when he was old enough. He got odd jobs working on the railroad and prospecting in the United States.

He married in 1875, which is somewhat late for that time period.«/i»
