- Mary was the third daughter of George Smyth of Belfast.

- (Medical):On 8 Sep 1870, Mary and several other relatives sailed from Montreal, Canada bound for Liverpool, England aboard the iron ship, "W. H. Hazelden." The ship was seen on 18 Sep 1870 at 47 degrees north latitude and 47 degrees west longitude, but was never heard from again. [2]
