Notes |
- Ronald suffered very delicate health during his youth, so he was educated entirely by private tutors.
When he was 15, he joined the Fife Light Horse Volunteers, and was soon promoted to Captain. He later became an officer in the Fifeshire Artillery Volunteers. After spending a year at Sandhurst, he joined the Grenadier Guards and served in that regiment from 1879 to 1884.
In Feb 1883, he entered politics and in 1884 he ran as the Liberal candidate for the Ross-shire seat that was vacant because of the retirement of Sir Alexander Matheson, Baronet of Lochalsh. He was opposed by Mr. Allan Mackenzie, younger of Kintail (later Sir Allan), the Conservative candidate, and by Dr. Roderick Macdonald, the Crofter candidate. Ronald won by 383 votes.
He took an active part in the agitation in 1884 which led to the extension of the Franchise to householders. On the dissolution of Parliament in 1885, he ran for re-election for the county of Ross as the Liberal candidate and was again opposed by Dr. Roderick Macdonald. This time Macdonald won by 2006 votes.
During the first part of 1886, Ronald acted as Private Secretary at the Foreign Office to the Earl of Rosebery and formed a close friendship with the Earl.
In 1886, he ran for the Dumbartonshire seat against the Tory candidate, Sir Archibald Orr Ewing. Robert campaigned for Home Rule even though he had opposed Home Rule in 1884 and 1885. He was defeated by 32 votes. He immediately ran for the Leith Burghs seat and won by a large majority.
In the fall of 1886, Robert accompanied Lord Rosebery to India and toured the entire country returning for the session of 1886-1887. In the fall of 1887, Robert visited Canada and Vancouver's Island, then travelled home via San Francisco and the United States.
He was a J.P. and D.L. for the counties of Ross and Fife.
