- Angus studied at the University and King's College, Aberdeen where he earned his M.A. degree in 1832. He then attended the Divinity Hall for three years. He continued his studies at the University of Edinburgh under Sir William Hamilton, Dr. Jamieson, Dr. Hope, and Dr. Chalmers.
After living for several years in Germany and Sweden, he returned home and entered into Holy Orders as a clergyman of the Church of England. He was ordained to the Curacy of South Shields by Bishop Mattby of Durham in 1841. In 1845 he was appointed to the Vicarage of Seham Harbor and in 1859 to the Rectory of Seaham.
He served as Justice of the Peace for County Durham and Honorary Chaplain to the 2nd Durham Artillery Volunteers.
