  • Notes
    • Samuel was the son of Thaddeus Bowman and Polly Doolittle (Cutler) Bigelow.

He was born in the "Inman Castle" in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which was General Putnam's headquarters for the Battle of Bunker Hill. He was in boarding schools from the age of 5 1/2 years, and had many escapades during his school years.

He graduated from Williams College, Massachusetts in 1845 and from Harvard Law School in 1846. He went to California in 1853 and became the Manager of Estates for Thomas O. Larkin (U.S. Consul to California before 1846).

Samuel was elected to the California State Legislature 1861-62. His first wife died in 1864.

He traveled around the world twice and at various times served as President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Dirctor of seven different banks, corporations, water companies and railroads.
