- James was the son of Ira and Dorcas (Flint) Wilkins. He moved to Boston, Massachusetts in 1845 and was engaged there in teaming. He went to California in 1849 and after staying there for two years, he returned to Boston.
In 1854, James moved to Hillsboro, New Hampshire and settled on a farm about one mile east of Centre Village.
His first wife was Letitia Bennett, who died 15 Oct 1865.
