- Hugh entered Exeter College, Oxford in 1848, where he graduated B.A. in 1851.
He entered into Holy Orders, and his first charge was the curacy of Christ Church, St. Pancras. From there he went to St. Anne's, Soho, and then became Archdeacon at Tenison's Chapel, St. James, Westminster. He also served as chaplain to St. Peter's Hospital, Berners Street.
He was not married.
