- Charles went to Harrow in Sep 1847, was Monitor in 1853, left in midsummer of the same year and entered Cains College, Cambridge. He took his degree of B.A. and was eighth Classic of his year. He was made a Fellow of his College in 1857.
He was called to the Bar, but after a time gave up the law and became a lecturer at Cains College, Cambridge. He was appointed a member of the Syndicate of Modern Languages in the University, as he was a very good linguist.
