- When Stuart's elder brother, James, was appointed Consul-General at Montevideo, Uruguay, he disposed of his right of succession to the family estates and gave it to Stuart before he left for South America.
In addition to the Teaninich estate, Stuart owned and took active personal interest in managing extensive estates in Ceylon.
