    • Seymour joined the Seaforth Highlands, and served in that distinguished corps in the Afghan War in 1878-80. He was wounded at the capture of Peiwar Kotal, and severely wounded at the battle of Kandahar. He was awarded the medal and four clasps and bronze star for this campaign.

      He also served with his regiment in the Egyptian War of 1882, for which he also was awarded the medal and clasp and bronze star. He took part in the Bechuanaland Expedition in 1884-85, for which he was promoted to Major; and was with the Hazara expeditionary force of 1891, which secured him another medal and clasp.

      He took a distinguished part in the operations in Chitral in 1895, for which he received the medal and clasp and was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel.
