Notes |
- William had a distinguished military career beginning on 30 Jul 1778 when he joined the 51st Regiment of Foot as an Ensign. He rose steadily through the ranks serving with distinction at Minorca and in the campaigns in Flanders.
As a Captain, he exchanged into the 42nd Royal Highlanders, Black Watch, on 8 Sep 1789, and continued his steady rise in rank. On 1 Jan 1801, he was made Brevet Colonel. As Brigadier-General, he served on the Staff in Ireland and Great Britain.
In March 1804, he received the appointment of Inspecting Field Officer of Volunteers. Upon his promotion to Major-General on 25 Apr 1808, he was placed on the Staff of the West Indies and took command of Barbadoes, Surinam, and other places in that area. He also served as Governor of Trinidad.
He was made Lieutenant-General on 4 Jun 1813, and in 1816 was appointed D.L. for Dorsetshire.
