  Hazel, the first child of Laura and Walter, was born at Stillwater, Minnesota, just across the St. Croix River from Hudson, Wisconsin where Laura's parents lived. She was baptized at home by the Pastor of St. Paul's Church whose minister served both the inhabitants of Stillwater and Hudson. St. Paul's Episcopal Church Records, Hudson, WI: 1893 March 3: Hazel St. Croix, born August 11, 1892; baptized at home. Parents: Walter Scott St. Croix and Laura Jane St. Croix Witnesses: James Munro, Laura Jane St. Croix, Eliz. M Vellie, Wm M Vellie. The St. Croix family left Stillwater by 1900 when they emigrated to North Dakota to homestead, and Hazel grew up in North Dakota. Hazel was married at age 17 to Jim Berry and lived nearly next door to her parents. Hazel and Jim had six children when she died in the post World War I influenza epidemic. Her parents, Laura and Walter St. Croix, raised the six Berry children with their own family. 1915 North Dakota State Census, Renville Co, Stafford Twp, DWL #58: James E.
