  • Notes
    • "Deacon Roe" as he was called, was an odd fish, and something of a humorist, as well as a deacon of Dr. Porter's church. Standing in his doorway one morning, soon after the Universalist Church was built, he was accosted by a stranger, who asked him if he had seen a stray white horse passing that way. "No," was the reply. "Where had I better look for him?" queried the stranger. "Oh well!" said the deacon, "p'r'aps you'd better go to the Universalist grounds, 'bout everything fetches up there nowadays."

Nehemiah was a known citizen, a cabinet maker by trade. His home for over half a century, was a large three-story frame building beyond Vernon Street in Roxbury, Massachusetts. It had been the residence of James Orr, a blacksmith who bought it from Edmund Weld.

Huge boulders of conglomerate were strewn about near his farm and one of them called "Rocking Stone" was a famous natural curiosity. It was located on the Munroe Farm, in the northwest corner of Mr. J. P. Townsend's estate on Townsend Street.

Land was purchased from Deacon Nehemiah Munroe for the Dudley Street Baptist Church. The first wooden building was raised 10 May 1820. The Munroe farm of 22 acres, between Munroe and Townsend Streets was bought by the town in 1829. Nehemiah's second wife, Thankful Stratton, was from Fitzwilliam, New Hampshire.
