Notes |
- Mary Anne "May" Munroe married Fred Roland Brainard, who graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1880. Lieutenant Brainard was aboard the USS Kearsarge when it grounded on a reef south of Jamaica. He and one enlisted man sailed 800 miles in a sixteen foot dinghy, to Aspinwal (later named Colon), Panama to cable the news to the Navy Department and to attempt to find help for the ship. It is thought that the difficulties of this sailing trip brought on Fred's early retirement from the Navy and his death. (The USS Kearsarge was the ship that sank the CSS Alabama in the U.S. Civil War.)
