- Grafton graduated from St. John's College in 1882 with two academic degrees, and from the University of Pennsylvania with a DDS. He set up his dental practice in Springfield, Illinois, and in 1890, he and Betty Brown were married there. After fifteen years of general practice, he became one of the ten charter members of the American Association of Orthodontists.
