Notes |
- Hugh entered the army in early life as a Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery. In 1878, at the outbreak of the war with Afghanistan, Lieutenant Ross volunteered to join any field battery going to the front. He was at once posted to G Battery, 4th Brigade, forming part of General Sir Donald Stewart's army. He was attacked by dysentery at Quettah, and did not report his illness, but marched with his battery, doing his normal duty to the last. When the forces reached Pishni Valley, his illness increased to such an extent that he was unable to proceed further. He died there in camp on 12 Jan 1879. He was not married.
