Notes |
- Walter entered the army early in his life. He joined the Second Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry (68th Regiment) as a Lieutenant. He was later promoted to Captain and Major.
In 1887, Walter's older brother, Duncan, died and Walter inherited the estate of Culcairn. At the time, Walter was a Captain serving in India. Shortly after hearing of his brother's death, he returned home on leave and was married on 8 Jun 1887 at St. Stephen's Church in South Kensington. He married May Stewart, the daughter of the distinguished General Sir Donald Stewart, Baronet, G.C.B., who served as Commander-in-Chief in India and later as Governor of Chelsea Hospital.
May died in India in 1891, and Walter remarried in 1897.
