  • Notes
    • James "Jim" was born at the Coventry ranch which was located about five miles south of Inman, Holt County, Nebraska. His parents were living with James' grandfather, James Coventry, at the time. When grandfather James died, he left $500 to his namesake grandson to be given to him when he turned twenty-one. When he received the money, he did as any young man would do--he bought a new automobile.

James "Jim" attended school in South Valley and after moving to Inman he attended the Inman School. School was not his first love, he much preferred the ranch life, which consisted of working with cattle and in the hayfields.

The family moved into the town of Inman in the fall of 1913, first living two blocks west of the flagpole on the southwest corner. Early in the 1920's George moved his family to the northwest corner. Jim lived in that home until after his marriage.

Whe he was sixteen, Jim had typhoid fever and was very ill. He was lucky to have survived. No other family members caught the disease. Dr. William Noyes was his doctor.

When his education was completed, Jim helped his father, George, and brother, Kenneth, with the ranch work. The brothers had joint ventures in a car and a truck. Jim matured to be six feet tall, had grey eyes, and beautiful wavy, dark brown hair. He was a very good dancer and had many friends from the Inman area that attended dances with him.

In 1930, James married Mildred "Millie" Tomlinson, the daughter of Henry W. and Lucy Lavinia (France) Tomlinson. They met in about 1928 at a dance in the O'Neill area. They were married at the Presbyterian Manse in O'Neill. The young couple lived with George and Mina Coventry for about six weeks. They then moved to the upstairs of the O'Halloran house and later to the down stairs. This house was located on the northeast crner two blocks west of the inman flagpole. While living up stairs, all of their water had to be carried up in a bucket, and all of the waste water had to be carried down. In the fall of 1931, they moved to one of George's properties just awest of main street in Inman. The house was located across the street east of the IOOF Hall.

James owned two trucks and provided for the family with his trucking business.

In May 1938, James' father bought forty acres on the west edge of Inman. James and his wife and three-year-old daughter, Joan, moved into a large two story house on this property. Their second daughter, Kay Louise, was born there on 3 Jan 1939. Jim sold his trucks and began working the farm with his father and brother. During the following years, Jim slowly built an exceptional herd of Black Angus Cattle.

In 1946, Jim took over his father's milk route, bottling the milk and delivering to customer's homes and to The Fair Store. When his father died in 1947, Jim took over his father's insurance business.

In the mid 1950's, Jim served several years on the School Board of the Inman Schools, Consolidated District #30. He held the office of treasurer for this board.

As a true Coventry, Jim was a man of few words, but a man who was loved and respected by all. His grandchildren thought he was the grandest grandfather of all. He dearly loved Inman, the South Valley, and Holt County. One other love of his was pie, but only two kinds, big and little. At one time he remarked how lucky he was to have a mother and a wife that could bake such wonderful pies.

In 1975, Jim and Millie began spending thier winters in Mesa, Arizona. Jim had been having health problems, mostly sinus, asthma, and lung problems. No doubt these were proviked by years of sitting on a tractor seat in the fields and driving a hay sweep that stirred up the dust and hay particles. He thoroughly enjoyed the time he spent in Arizona, making many new friends.

On 26 May 1979, Jim sold all of his farm machinery, but he continued to live on the acreage west of town. Jim was happy to sit on the large east front porch of the home in the summer and continue to spend his winters in Mesa.

James died on 25 Mar 1986 at the Mesa Lutheran Hospital in Mesa, Arizona. His family was with him. His remains were returned to Nebraska and funeral services were held at Biglin Brothers Chapel in O'Neill on 31 Mar 1986. He was buried in the Inman Cemetery close to his mother, father, two sisters, and his brother. This cemetery is near the road that runs from Inman to the Coventry Ranch in South Valley, a road that has been traveled constantly by the Coventrys since 1899.
