Notes |
- Isabelle (or Isabella) "Belle" Munro was born in Scotsburn, Pictou County, Nova Scotia, Canada. She lived on the family farm near the village of Scotsburn, in the home that had first been built by her grandfather, Andrew Munro. Her father increased the size of the house to give room for their thirteen children.
The family spoke both Gaelic and ENglish and they attended Bethel Presbyterian Church, just west of Scotsburn.
In 1869, Isabelle moved to Nebraska with her sister, Ann, and brothers, James and John, and possibly others of the family. Margaret and Adam also moved to the U.S. possibly later. The 1870 census says she was living in Schuyler, Colfax County, Nebraska at that time.
Isabella (or Isabelle) "Belle" lived in Nebraska and Canada. In 1870, she was living in Schuyler, Colfax County, Nebraska.
Belle and Robert Smith were married in Schuyler on 20 May 1873 by Alexander Sutherland, a Presbyterian minister. Robert had also moved from Nova Scotia to Nebraska.
In about 1875, Robert and Isabelle moved with their infant son to Red Buttes, Wyoming, a small railroad town south of Laramie. After adding a daughter to the family in Wyoming, they moved back to Schuyler, Nebraska, where Robert took up farming. Four other children were born in Schuyler.
Early in 1893, the family moved to Olds, Alberta, Canada along with many other families from Schuyler. Ther traveled to Olds on special immigrant railroad cars. The trip took a week and meals were cooked on a little potbellied stove at the end of the car.
Dr. Kay was the first Doctor in the community of Olds and he often asked Isabelle to accompany him to the home of a sick patient to assist him.
Isabelle earned money by boarding the school teacher for twelve dollars a month. In 1897, there was a mining boom in Olds and Isabelle obtained a contract to fill wooden tubs with fresh butter. These tubs were shipped to the mining camps. She was paid fifteen cents a pound for the butter.
In the early 1900's, the family moved to British Columbia and lived near Langley Prairie (later named Langley). First they were members of the Cloverdale Presbyterian Church, and then transferred their membership to the nearby church in Murrayville. Belle was an active member of the Sharon Presbyterian Church until her death.
Isabelle died in 1938 and was buried in Murrayville cemetery along with several other members of her family including her husband, daughter Grace, and sons Daniel and Albert.
