He commanded the USS Eeina Mercedes (a Spanish War trophy) station ship at the U.S. Naval Academy. He later commanded the USS Richmond (cruiser) and the USS Tennessee (battleship).
Laurance served as Naval Attache in Rome, Italy 1933-1936. In 1940-1941, he served as Captain of the Yard at the Brooklyn Naval Shipyard and liason officer to the New York World Fair. In 1941, he returned to Rome as naval Attache and was taken prisoner upon the entry of the United States in World War II. He was released with the first exchange of diplomats in June 1942.
In 1942-1946, he served as Chief of the General Staff and Inspector at the Naval Mission in Lima, Peru and Inspector General of the Peruvian Navy. He continued living in Peru until 1956 when he moved to Coronado, California. After his wife, Emily, died in 1962, he went to Madrid, Spain, to be with his daughter, Jane, who was Secretary to the U.S. Ambassador to Spain. He died there in 1964.
