- In 1841, William, who was under 21 years of age, petitioned the probate court to have William K. Ham appointed his guardian. William K. Ham was the husband of William's oldest sister, Jerusha.
William's first wife was Charlotte Mills. They were married in 1850, but she died before 1860. The 1850 census of Vanderberg County, Illinois, shows William and his wife, Charlotte living with William's sister, Catherine, and her husband. On the 1860 census, his wife is listed as Lavina and he has two children. It is not known which wife was the mother of the two children.
In 1860, William was a 32 year-old farmer living with his family in Union Township, Vanderburgh County, Indiana.
