"...son Robert said to be Captain who m 1703 Christian dr of Hugh Fraser of Eskadale and was father of John min of South Uist and then Eddrachillis d 1755."

John studied for the Church at the University, and at King's College, Aberdeen, where he graduated M.A. in 1728. He served for a time as chaplain in the family of George Lord Reay. After receiving his license from the Presbytery of Tongue on 8 Aug 1732, he was ordained and admitted as minister of South Uist on 14 Jan 1737.

South Uist was predominantly Catholic having some 100 Protestants in a population of about 1300 adults. His position there for nearly eight years was anything but pleasant.

On receiving a call to Edderachilles on 7 Mar 1743, from the Presbytery of Tongue, he at once accepted and was inducted there on 21 Jun. He found the work there much more congenial. His stipend was 800 marks Scots. He served there for 19 years until his death in 1755.
