  • Notes
    • Simon was the 9th son and had no inheritance, so he went to America in the 1700's and built up a mercantile business in Sunbury, Georgia which was a thriving port south of Savannah at that time. He had warehouses and owned a dock, and might have been given a land grant by the King. He remained loyal to Scotland-England and was a Tory during revolutionary times. He was driven out of the state and fled to Florida (possibly). His wife remained with her children to protect their remaining possessions. He later petitioned the Georgia Legislature to pay reparations for his vast losses.

He was called Sir Simon Munro of New Inverness, and owned a rice plantation in Liberty County, Georgia.

      **********
The following is from the James Gordon Munro reference:

«i»Simon Munro, 1741 - Dec 29, 1790, a slave trader, owned land with partner Darling, along Altamaha and Savannah Rivers and 1700 acres, a plantation he named Novare, granted to him by King George III in Georgia. He married Elizabeth West of Westfield Plantation, Georgia. He is buried at Westfield, donor of the silver communion service used for many years in old Midway Congregational Church. Early in the Revolutionary War, Simon Munro, a resident of St. John's Parish, was banished from the State of Georgia, and forbidden to set foot within its borders, because of his Tory activities (Georgia state historical marker). «/i»The History and Genealogy of the Habersham Family«i» states that Col. Sir Simon Munro was the younger son of Sir Robert Munro 24th Baron of Foulis and Mary Seymour, daughter of Henry Seymour of Woodland County, Dorset. Simon Munro came to Georgia from Inverness.«/i»
      **********

Error alert: Mary Seymour died in 1732, nine years before Simon's birth so she couldn't have been his mother. He is not listed as a child of Sir Robert Munro of Foulis in Mackenzie or R.W. Munro.
