- George graduated from Harvard College in 1874 and from Harvard Medical School in 1897. He also attended Phillips Andover Academy in Andover, Massachusetts and Sachville, New Brunswick, Canada.
He served as chairman of the Republican Town Committee of Ashfield, Massachusetts and was elected to the state legislature in 1900, serving there for many years. He also served for a time as medical examiner.
He was a member of the Ashfield, Massachusetts Congregational Church, the Masons, and the Franklin County Medical Society. He was interested in wild flowers and birds.
Dr. Fessenden was well informed and well read. He kept up to date on all the new medical treatments and, in some areas, he was ahead of his time.
The Ashfield Historical Society kept Dr. Fessenden's sleigh and sleigh robe on display for some time.
