- In Nov 1943, Donald joined the Marine Corps at the age of 17. As a corporal in the 5th Marine Division, he was on Iwo Jima and witnessed the famous flag raising on Mount Suribachi on 23 Feb 1945.
He worked for 43 years for the Commercial Union Insurance Company in Boston, Massachusetts as a computer specialist, and for many years he participated in musical and stage productions in his spare time.
After his retirement, Donald volunteered at Harvard University, working with faculty and students at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and Harvard Law School. He also worked at Harvard's Hemenway Gym and at the school's sports events.
He died of stomach cancer at his home at the age of 70.
