  • Notes
    • By 1804, Donald had enlisted in the 2nd Battalion of the 78th Regiment of Foot. He sailed to Gibralter in 1805 and was in Sicily in May 1806. He also served in Egypt. He accompanied Major McPherson to India, where he married Isabella, known as "Bell". Their daughter, Ellen, was born while the regiment was on its way to Calcutta.

Lance Sergeant Donald died at Berhampore. His widow was entitled to a credit of two pounds and ten pence three farthings as well as prize money for the capture of guns and ammunition at Jubbalpore, but no pension. After six months, she was struck off the regiment's ration strength. With no means of support, Bell had to either starve or re-marry.

She married Private (later Pay Sergeant) James Ward on 12 Aug 1822. They were married by Chaplain Coles who had buried her first husband, Donald, three months earlier. They had a son, James Ward, born 18 Feb 1824, but his father died the following year at Arakan. In Feb 1826, Bell married Sergeant Thomas Abbott at Berhampore.
