Samuel lived all his life in Chenango County, New York. He is listed in the public directory of Chenango County for 1869-1870 as a farmer and proprietor of a sawmill in the town of Norwich, New York.
Samuel's five oldest sons enlisted in Company B, 114th Regiment, New York Volunteers and fought in the US Civil War. Three of them died in the war.
