- Charles may have been descended from one of three brothers who went to the U.S. from Scotland paying for their passage by shoveling coal in the boiler room of the ship. When they arrived in the U.S., they went their separate ways and lost touch with each other.
Charles left home when he was 16 years old. He went to Nevada, Missouri as a roust-about with a circus.
