- James graduated from Oberlin College in 1900 with a degree of Bachelor of Philosophy. He received the degree of Bachelor of Laws from Columbia University in 1903.
He worked for the Census Bureau in Washington, D.C. 1900-1902. After receiving his law degree, he went to New York where he was admitted to the bar and entered the law office of James B. Dill. He was sent by the law firm to look after its interests in London and Paris where he remained for three years.
In 1921-1931, he was assistant solicitor and officer of the New York Title and Mortgage Company. In 1932-1934 he was associate counsel with the law firm of Cravath, De Gersdorff, Swaine, and Wood, representing the B.& O. Railroad and the Gulf Refining company. In 1934, he became advisory counsel with the Home Owners' Loan Corporation, New York Regional Office.
He was the author of a novel entitled "The Ring Buster" published in 1940.
He died of a heart attack at his home in St. George, Staten Island, New York. He had no children.
